Upclose and Personal :Praveena

Real name : Shweta Tiwari

by Umangi de Mel

Two lovers, Anurag Basu and Prerna Sharma are destined to go through life’s most unpleasant and bitter experience as they try their best to win their love. Anurag, a pleasant, soft spoken son of a wealthy father, Moloy Basu who’s good natured and compassionate has a wife, Mohini Basu who on the contrary is arrogant and manipulative. Prerna is a blend of modern aspirations and traditional values.

Rajesh, Prerna’s father together with Moloy dearly wish to get Anurag and Prerna married to each other. The two of them fall in love but circumstances force Anurag to marry Komolika. Though scorned, Prerna moves on and so does the soap for months and years…

‘Kasauti Zindagi Ki’, better known as ‘Praveena’ in Sri Lanka has obviously dragged even the ones who initially let fly a torrent of unmentionable words when the rest at home monopolised the television at 9.00 p.m.

Talking through first-hand experience, the Indian soap operas have however made a twist, making the majority of viewers in S.L. go bonkers. Some may not admit their ‘preference’ assuming for Indian is less sophisticated, but the plain truth is our folks do watch these for reasons better known to themselves!

My tiny niece-to-be who’s barely three and goes to a leading private school in the city could actually say ‘Praveena’ faster than she could say school. The enormous response for ‘Praveena’ in the pearl of the Indian Ocean was actually powerful enough to invite the dearly beloved Prerna Sharma or rather Shweta Tiwari who’s apparently popular than women’s day, among the young and the young at heart, here in S.L.

For the sake of pacifying my editor for a change and show off a little to the die-hard ‘P’ fans in the process, I pressed a few digits to get hold of a top man in the organizing committee. Finally, acquiring a press pass with a few more phone calls, being NOT the media sponsor, the reporter in me managed to arrive at the destination to have dinner with Praveena on March 18, half an hour early, thanks to the company transport that functions better during the weekend.

The luxurious air at hotel Taj Samudra smelled a tad too common as the lobby was fully occupied by ‘Praveena’ fans who were probably seeing the hotel for the first time in their lives. In the meantime, having arrived a few hours ago, Shweta was warmly welcomed by Sirasa TV, the organisers of the event, as well as her fans at the airport.

She probably smiled till her face ached, from the time she stepped on the Island, and probably had to go through many a sessions of small talk, endless hugs and immaculate behaviour apt for a star, as she required an extra hour to relax a little after arriving late at the hotel around 8 p.m.

The dinner was organised to give her ardent fans a chance to dine with their favourite star. Having had to shift rather uncomfortably in their chairs for two hours, the kids, grandmothers, families, reporters, photographers, elites and various other people who filled the crystal ballroom finally were lucky to see her upclose and personal.

Shweta Tiwari was accompanied by her husband, Raja Choudhary and her six year old daughter ‘Palak.’

Overwhelmed by the response, Shweta claimed her Sri Lankan tour was the most exciting thing ever. Irrespective of the language barrier, she explained how much she felt at home immediately after stepping out of the plane. Thanking her fans profusely for appreciating her work, Shweta spared a second to answer the question that I had chosen out of my list of ten questions.

“I’m very serious but mischievous and tend to lie a lot. Nevertheless I’m a truthful person!!” Quite a paradox… but that’s how the star described herself. Feeling ‘lucky’ nevertheless for being able to get a word edgewise, I returned to my chair thinking of way I can forget about the severe neck pain I got trying to come up with more learned questions to ask the star in a more exclusive interview.

The next 90 minutes gave ‘Praveena’ a chance to witness many cultural dance acts that made her jaw drop.

And finally at half past eleven, she returned to her room in one piece exhausted to the bonethanks to the ‘body guards’.

Shweta-Ronit ki unHoli haathapai

By: Tushar Joshi

Even though Holi is over, the colour on Shweta Tiwari’s face has yet to fade. The actress had a fight with co-star Ronit Roy on the Kasautii Zindagii Kay sets on Friday evening, when a routine shoot turned into a major fiasco.

The scene required Roy to put some colour on Tiwari, but she claims he went overboard and stuffed her mouth and ears with gulal.

“I don’t know why he did that. All that was asked of him was to apply minimal colour on me. But Ronit was in the mood to play Holi and was running around the sets dousing everyone with colour,” says Shweta.

‘I pushed him’

Is it true that she punched him? “If someone comes and douses you with colour zabardasti, against your wishes, will you stay quiet? Of course I pushed him, but anyone in my place would do that. I definitely didn’t punch him, as he claims,” she says.

Tiwari now is shooting in Sri Lanka for a commercial, “The colour is still on my face and despite bathing, isn’t going away. I had made it clear that I had to leave that day for Sri Lanka, and was trying to shoot as much as possible. In fact, our director had strictly instructed Ronit to be careful in applying colour on me, despite which he did this,” she says.

Adds a source who witnessed the incident, “Ronit already had a wrist injury a few days back. I saw Shweta pushing him and asking him to back off. From where I was standing, I couldn’t see any punching.”

Set witnesses

Tiwari says the entire Kasautii set was witness to what transpired. “Why don’t you go on the set and talk to people. They know who did what. I don’t want to give undue importance to the person or the incident.”

Meanwhile, Ronit’s sole comment was, “I don’t want to talk about Shweta Tiwari.”

Stolen: Prerna’s mehenga mobile

By: Vickey Lalwani

Film City was the scene of high voltage drama on Thursday evening, when Shweta Tiwari stopped the shoot of Kasautii Zindagii Kay. Reason? Prerna’s mobile was stolen.

Dressed in a black-and-maroon sari, the actress was livid with almost everyone on the set. Said an eyewitness, “Shweta was furious. She was screaming at the spot-boys. She even demanded that the production crew get her a new mobile phone, or she would not resume shooting.”

The incident happened at 5 pm, and shooting resumed only at 6.15 pm.

While Shweta fretted and fumed, co-actors Ronit Roy and Tina Parakh cooled their heels. When contacted, Shweta said, “How could I shoot immediately, when my Nokia N70 phone, which is quite expensive, got flicked?”

At about 4.50 pm, Shweta had stepped out of her vanity van, without her mobile phone. “I had just worn that sari. After every change, I have a habit of wearing perfume. I was coolly sitting outside, spraying the perfume on and reading the next scene. I told my boy to get my mobile from the van.

He came and said it was missing. All this happened in a span of seven minutes,” she revealed.

Known people

Shweta called her number immediately from someone else’s phone, but the thief had already disconnected her handset.

“This is the seventh or eighth time I have lost my mobile on the sets. Being an actor, I can’t carry it in my hand all the time. For most scenes, I have to keep it with someone else. It’s natural to leave the mobile in the vanity van without realising it; the vanity van is like a second home. T

he pain of losing a phone worsens when you lose it in the midst of people you know well. It becomes impossible to suspect anybody; it could even be someone who came from outside and went into the van for a lark,” she added.

The actress resumed shooting after nearly an hour and a half. “We needed daylight for the next scene, and it had started getting dark,” she said.

No time

At the moment, Shweta is using an old Nokia Communicator, which hangs frequently. “I don’t have the time to go and buy a new handset. Tomorrow morning, I am leaving for Colombo, where I will shoot for a Sri Lankan health product.

There are two other models in the ad — one is Brazilian and the other Sri Lankan. When I return, after three days, I’ll buy a new handset. I’ve lost all my numbers and contacts. I don’t know how I’ll start again,” she laments.

Shweta Aur Vinay Ki Shararat

Shweta Tiwari (Prerna of Kasautii Zindagii Kay) and Vinay Jain (Aryan of Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin) will soon come together in a play, Shararat.

The first show will be staged in April. The play is co-produced by the husband-wife duo of Navin Kumar and Prairna Agarwal (of Pyar Hua Chori Chori fame). While Prairna has written the play, Navin will direct.

Room doom

Says Prairna, “The play has three characters — Kavita (Shweta), Kunal (Vinay) and a Sardar (Navin). It is a romantic comedy. Vinay and Shweta land up in the same hotel room, and each wants the other to leave.”

Explaining why she chose Shweta and Vinay, she said, “Shweta looks serious in the TV show, but I could sense that she is a very chulbuli ladki in real life. When I met her, I knew I had hit the nail on the head.

Vinay Jain

As for Vinay, I need a suave, billionaire look, which went with what I saw of him in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin. I knew he was different from the negative shades he portrays.”

Done theatre before

This is not the first time that Shweta will be doing stage; she earlier acted in Khubsoorat, Kiraydar and Gaz Foot Inch, in her pre-television days.

Talking to HiTLIST, Shweta says, “But of course, now it will be a different story. Shararat is a big challenge. I haven’t faced the audience eye-to-eye in seven years, but I am sure I’m going to enjoy it.”

Vinay too has done plays — a comedy, Two To Tango — but he says this one is different. “I was dying to do a comedy like Shararat, and you will realise what I mean once it starts to roll.”

Both actors have started rehearsing for the new assignment. “We are reading the script in detail till late almost everyday. It is really exhausting, but satisfying as well,” Vinay concludes. A studio’s been booked for rehearsals.
