The waiting room

That’s what Mehboob Studio turned into, when Shweta Tiwari arrived five hours late for a shoot while several top actors waited for her

Shweta Tiwari

Shweta Tiwari (Prerna of Kasautii Zindagii Kay) shot for a new show Dhamaal Express (made under the banner Eternal Dreams) for 9X new show on Wednesday, but not before infuriating top TV actors - Sakshi Tanwar, Mona Singh, Urvashi Dholakia, Tasneem Sheikh and Shabbir Ahluwalia.

Says an insider, “Shweta was supposed to report on the sets (Mehboob Studio) at 8 am, when she did not report until 10 am the actors started getting restless and enquiring if she was coming at all. Producer Boney Jain kept reassuring them that she would arrive very soon. However, that did not happen. By the time she arrived, almost everybody on the set was furious.”

Finally Shweta walked in 5 hours late and did not even apologise. “She did not even say why she was late,” says one of the actors. Apparently, Shweta has three prjects at hand and she seems to have taken more than she can chew. She is shooting for Kasautii…, Jjhoom India and now Dhamaal Express.

The actor who complains, endorses, “Why has she taken up so many assignments? Why were we asked to cool heels and wait for her for six hours? Even after she arrived, she kept doing a lot of gimmicks and wasted more time. This is just not done.”

When contacted, producer Boney wanted to know who told us about the fiasco. Initially, he laughed but perhaps wanting to kill the story, he said, “Every actor was given a different call time.”

Tiwari remained unavailable for comment. We sent her messages, but she did not bother to revert.

personally i think she is piling on so much work just 2 escape her personal traumas but really she should not over stress herself

Shweta to Perform at Ekta’s Gala

Ekta’s gala plans

Ekta Kapoor’s television awards event to be held in December in the United Arab Emirates will be the grandest TV event ever as she has roped in Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan to perform at the function. If that isn’t all, her entire Balaji brigade from small to big stars will be present at the function interacting with fans and even performing on stage.

Among the top names participating in the show are the new Tulsi Gautami Gadgil, Parvati aka Sakshi Talwar, Anita Hassandani, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Swetha Tiwari, Prachi Desai, and many more will entertain audiences on stage at the Balaji Global Indian TV Honours 2007. Ekta surely wanted to make this event international and as big as the film awards. And to add that dash of extra glamour she has roped in her friend and filmmaker Karan Johar who will be felicitated at the awards and will also host a segment of the awards.

Pin up boys, poster girls WANTED

Pin up boys, poster girls wanted

By A.L. Chougule

There was a time when television serials were high on the glam factor. In mid-2000, when daily soaps made their entry on the small screen, the medium had thrown up quite a few pin-up boys and girls. Smriti Irani, Shweta Tiwari, Cezanne Khan, Iqbal Khan, Ejaz Khan, Mona Singh and Anita Hasnandani became overnight stars. However in the last two years, despite the advent of several new good-looking youngsters on the small screen, none of them seem to have the charisma of their older counterparts. So what’s stopping them from becoming poster girls and pin-up boys?

“I think the benchmarks set by the older stars are too high and therefore difficult for others to emulate,” feels well-known television director Sanjay Upadhyay. He incidentally had introduced Smriti Irani on television in Aatish before she went on to become a cult figure with Kyunki a year later. In Upadhyay’s opinion, the super success of some of the television actors is directly related to the success of their shows. “They became brands because their shows were successful,” he says, adding, “While others couldn’t achieve those starry heights because their shows had not made a mark.”

Successful television content, according to Balaji’s creative head Nivedita Basu, is primarily all about relatable characters and stories. “Faces don’t get eyeballs. Viewers relate more to characters than faces. But if a good-looking actor plays a popular character he or she becomes equally popular. It is good to have great actors but talent also plays a key role in success,” says Nivedita, adding, “To be a pin-up boy or girl, you need that extra zing that helps you stand apart.”

Producer-director Deeya Singh too feels that television is not about super heroes but real people and real characters. “The beauty of television is that it catapults an ordinary looking person into an instant rage. But lately there has been too much of overlap in characterisations,” says Deeya. She also blames poor scripts that prevent characters from making a mark. “The roles have to take the characters to the next level. When too much of duplication starts happening the star value goes down,” says Deeya.

Agrees producer Sunjoy Wadhwa of Saath Phere. “New shows don’t seem to offer author-backed roles and stories are letting down characters,” he says. In his opinion some of the actors went on to become brands because of the novelty of daily soaps. “Now seven years the novelty factor has gone,” he adds.

Another major reason, according to Upadhyay, is that it is very difficult to find a fine blend of talent and good looks. “Often talented actors are short on looks and vice versa. Also the demand is so high and supply so short that a reasonable combination of talent and looks clinches the deal,” he says.

Shweta to be the face of GEM in India

EMPIRE Home Appliances, a group company of Maharaja Appliances that owns the brand GEM, is looking for a strategic partner. According to company sources, promoter Harish Kumar is likely to dilute around 25% in favour of the new partner. The Maharaja Appliances group, one of the largest kitchen appliances manufacturers in the country that owns the brand Maharaja Whiteline, is also planning to spend Rs 100 crore on GEM.
“We are looking for a strategic joint venture partner. We are in talks with a few industry players and if all goes well, we expect the partnership to formalise before the end of this calendar year,” a company official told SundayET.
Maharaja Appliances acquired Kelvinator’s GEM brand last year as part of its strategy to foray into the white goods segment. It also bought 50% stake in consumer electronics company Beltek last year. In fact, Mr Kumar is an erstwhile promoter of Electrolux Kelvinator.
The group, which has major plans up its sleeves, is targeting a turnover of Rs 2,000 crore in the next five years. During 2005-06, the company achieved a turnover of Rs 300 crore.
Empire Home Appliances has aggressive plans to market products, including refrigerators, washing machine, microwave oven, colour TV, DVD player and home theatre system. “In all probability, we’ll add air conditioner to our present product portfolio in the next season. Apart from that, we are soon launching a 50 litres sideby-side refrigerator, which will be the first of its kind in the market,” the official said.
The company is also re-positioning the brand GEM in the market for which ad-spends would be considerably increased in the next financial year. “Recently, we launched a Rs 25-crore media campaign to promote the GEM brand. As part of that campaign, a new commercial featuring TV actor Shweta Tiwari will be launched by the month-end. We are targeting high-end middle class customers for our products,” he said.

shweta’s promise to her daughter

Shweta’s six-year-old demanded a holiday in Hong Kong to do a commercial

IT’S MY WAY: Palak with her parents Raja Chaudhry and Shweta Tiwari

Shweta Tiwari’s (Prerna of Kasautii Zindagii Kay) six-year-old daughter Palak has done her first commercial, Gala Brush, but not before blackmailing her parents!

Lavu (Palak’s nick name) demanded that she would shoot for the advertisement only if her parents (Shweta and Raja Chaudhry) take her to Disneyland in Hong Kong during her ongoing summer vacations. Shweta and Raja had to accept her demand.

All together now

The ad, which features Shweta and Raja too, was shot at Jaipan Studios last Friday. Shweta and Raja have done Surya Bulbs, Progressive Paint and Divine Pendant ads together, but this is for the first time that Palak is also with them.

They play a family in the ad. Lavu learnt about Disneyland Hong Kong on a game show where the winner would win a free trip to the place. “Mujhe bahut achcha laga TV mein dekhkar aur main chahti thi ki main bhi wahan jaun,” she tells HiTLIST.

Jo vaada kiya…

Raja says, “She did what we told her. Now we have to fulfill our promise. I don’t know if we can leave this month, but we’ll definitely go next month. It will be fun.”

Shweta says that she has done many ads before, but this one was special. “Lavu was with me. And that made it very exciting and entertaining.”

“And yes, we will abide by the shart (condition) Lavu laid down to do this ad. I will not face any problem in getting around eight days leave from Kasautii Zindagii Kay. I will utilise the non-block dates for the holiday,” Shweta adds.

Lavu’s sure

Asked what would she do if her mom and dad break their promise, Lavu shoots back, “Aisa nahin hoga. Woh myjhe zaroor le jayenge.”

Tiwari is taking driving lessons for her role in a upcoming film

Racing Ahead: Shweta Tiwari

After Saif Ali Khan in Ta Ra Rum Pum, it’s now Shweta Tiwari’s turn to burn some wheels on the race track.

The actress has been practising driving for her Raja Chaudhary’s Hinglish flick My Second Owner, revolving around car racing.

Tiwari may not have the extravagant canvas of Yash Raj Films which Khan had, but she has the moral and financial support of her producer husband.

Going professional

The practice sessions are being conducted by professional race experts (who also act in the film) Mihir Dharker and Sameer Sayyed.

About the film, Raja says, “Shweta and I play a married couple in the film, who own four cars including a Toyota Trueno.

We are about to sell off the Toyota Trueno when a friend advises us not to sell it off and suggests some modifications for the car. After doing the rehaul, Shweta and I win a race each- driving that car.”

Raja will be getting the modifications done on the Toyota Trueno (owned by the couple) from a workshop in Santacruz. The cost of modifying the car is 10 lakhs.

Man on a mission

Following Him: Saif Ali Khan

Talking to us after her practice session.

Shweta laughs, “Raja is on a mission.

He is like a man possessed when it come to upgrading his cars.

It’s an expensive indulgence but I can’t stop him.

I like to drive slowly and carefully but I have little choice now that I am acting in a film that is all about speed.

I am taking lessons to drive this car which I haven’t driven much before.

I usually  prefer to practise in the mornings.”

Another round of practice sessions will be required when Suraj completes the modifications on the Toyota Trueno. “Shweta has a lot of hard work on her hands.

She is not used to driving this car  but she has taken to her training like a duck takes to water. I am so proud of my wife,” Raja signs off.
